Activity 6: Family Heirloom Treasure Hunt
Activity: Create a fun scavenger hunt for the whole family searching for family heirlooms.
Approx. Time Required: 30 min- 1 hour
Purpose: Get creative, using fun clues to help your family members find special objects around your home that have been passed down from relatives. This game would make an enjoyable family home evening or holiday activity for the whole family. You could even include extended family. This activity can create a deeper appreciation for the heirlooms and the stories behind them.
Preparation: Prepare a fun scavenger hunt using clues leading participants to different heirlooms around the house.
Process/Ideas:
Write up several creative clues hinting at heirlooms found around the home. Clues can include description of the item, information about where the item came from, hints at the relative who originally owned the heirloom, or stories about why the object is important to your family.
Place a clue at each heirloom, leading the hunters to the next item. Leave one clue for the beginning of the hunt.
You can divide hunters into groups or you can compete all together. Hand the group(s) the first hint and let them try to figure out what heirloom the hint is referring to and where it is in the home.
Let the hunters “race” to the heirloom and first person there can read the next clue until all heirlooms are found. Include a fun prize at the last heirloom.
To make it more difficult, take the treasure hunt to another relative’s home, such as a grandparent’s home.
